Artesia gets its name from the many artesian wells that made the area an incredible place for farming and agriculture. The area was developed into one of the most important dairy districts in the 1920’s and 1930’s by Dutch and Portugese farmers. As with many places in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, by the 1950’s housing was becoming a major focus in the area. The farmers were pushed further and further to the east.
The Artesia water tower is an important landmark within the city and the citizens of the area hope to have it denoted as a Historical Landmark. Unfortunately and strangely enough, there are no records of its construction, which is believed to have taken place in 1911. In order for the citizens to succeed in labeling it as a Historical Landmark in the state of California they must be able to provide documentation of its creation. The water tower can hold 50,000 gallons of water and has been featured in several movies and TV shows.
